This week on Lucy & Kel, a deeply moving conversation (that had everyone in tears) unfolded around the words parents would most want their children to carry with them. The discussion was inspired by Grey’s Anatomy actor Eric Dane, who passed away in his 50s from ALS. Before his death, he recorded a Netflix special to be released shortly after he passed, ending with his final message to his daughters.

His closing words were simple and deeply emotional: “Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.”

The special also shared four pieces of advice for his daughters:

  • Live in the present
  • Fall in love with something
  • Find your people
  • Fight with dignity and strength — never give up

Lucy was in a flood of tears as she shared what she would want her daughter Shiloh to know. Listeners shared what they would want their children to remember. One said her children should live for themselves and understand that mistakes are part of learning. Another reminded hers that they are created with purpose and need not fear failure.

One listener shared a poem her late husband had written for their children, all under six at the time, as he was living with cancer:

“Eternal love is the deep desire that each child grows to contribute to society and His kingdom. Each child grows to fully love, appreciate, and enjoy life. Each child grows to be the best they can be. Eternal love is our profound love.”

A reminder that children should know they are loved, that they are enough, and that they are brave.
