This morning on 89.9 TheLight, our hearts were heavy as we reflected on the tragic events at Bondi Beach. What was meant to be a celebration of light and hope became a moment of profound grief, felt not only in Sydney, but across Australia.

Casey, producer of Lucy and Kel, was joined by Dave Adamson, Australian Director of YouVersion, to help us process the heartbreak many are feeling and the difficult questions that arise in moments like this. One question echoed loudly: Where is God in the midst of such tragedy?

Dave shared a perspective that gently reframed the moment. The message of Christmas, he reminded us, is found in one simple word: with. God is not distant or detached. God is present with us in grief, with families who have lost loved ones, with first responders who ran toward danger, and with everyday people choosing not to let others suffer alone. As Psalm 34:18 reminds us, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

In times like these, faith is not about having all the answers. It is about showing up. Grieving together. Listening. Creating safe spaces for pain, fear, and hard questions. Hope does not deny the darkness. It refuses to let the darkness win. And hope keeps showing up through ordinary people choosing compassion, presence, and courage.

If today feels overwhelming, please know you are not alone. TheLight Careline is available to talk right now on 9583 CARE (2273).

As we continue to grieve, may we choose to be with one another, and to stand alongside the brokenhearted with love, gentleness, and hope.
