The new Netflix series Adolescence has left many parents shaken by its raw, realistic portrayal of a teenage crime and its ripple effects on an everyday family. Youth expert Michelle Mitchell joined Rob and Ash to unpack why the show hits so hard and how parents can respond without fear. “It taps into every parent’s worst nightmare,” Michelle said. But she reminds us that while the story feels real, it’s fiction, and not a reflection of most families.

Michelle’s key message? Connection is everything. Parents are still the most powerful influence in their kids’ lives, even more than social media. She encourages setting boundaries, especially around technology, and making time for real conversations. Boys in particular need mentors who show up, set expectations, and walk beside them without judgement.

Instead of spiralling into worry, Michelle urges parents to lean in. “You’ve got this,” she says. It’s okay to feel shaken , but our role isn’t to panic, it’s to stay present. Being there, listening, and showing love makes a world of difference.
