Whatcha’ Watchin’ – Romantic Holiday Comedies
Main article content
Today I want to review not just one movie, but a whole genre of movies. I have called them ‘Romantic Holiday Comedies’ and Netflix has a plethora. I have never read a Mills n Boon book, but I imagine if you made them into movies this is what they would look like.
These are movies of about 90 minutes, set around ‘the holidays’ and involve some kind of unexpected love story- the young nanny who helps bring together a widower and his children at Halloween and finds love in the process; the wedding planner who falls in love with a man who *shock* doesn’t want a big wedding; the wealthy city lawyer who travels to the country to sell an old estate and falls in love with the ghost who haunts the house at Christmas; or the dating expert who decides to ‘date’ her husband to help save their flailing marriage.
These are entirely predictable. There is no doubt from the moment our star-crossed lovers meet that they are going to end up together; but they’ll need to overcome some obstacles along the way- she tries to help and he gets defensive; he attempts to offer some romantic overtures but is misunderstood; and there’s that moment when their eyes finally meet and you realise they have both fallen in love.
Straight from the Hallmark movie channel and with titles like ‘October Kiss’ ‘Autumn Dream’ ‘Ms Matched’ ‘Just the way you are’ and ‘Love by chance’ there’s just no doubting the truly mediocre nature of these movies.
The running time is perfect to fit into the toddler’s daytime nap or after you’ve run all the morning errands and there’s just enough time before school pick up… and they all live happily ever after!!
