Whatcha’ Watchin’ – The Checkout
Main article content
Ever wanted to know more about consumer law in Australia, but the very idea makes you want to fall asleep out of boredom? Then the Checkout is the show for you.
Created by several members of the Chaser comedy team, The Checkout airs on the ABC and addresses issues around misleading, dishonest, unfair and sometimes even illegal behaviour by manufacturers, retailers and service providers.
I know this doesn’t sound exciting, but segments are presented in various satirical and parody styles and are really funny. Each episode covers different aspects of consumer law and there are some regular segments too- product vs packshot puts the contents alongside the pretty picture on the packaging… the tasty looking chunky stew on the can is presented alongside the disturbingly grey swill that is actually contained inside; FU tube where viewers call or write in with personal complaints or observations; the Loving Pet Owner, who, like the Guilty Mum, reviews ridiculous products available for purchase; and Source of Confusion which highlights instances where a single source gives conflicting information, especially in relation to stress.
The humour is quite dry and sarcastic much of the time, which I love. It’s a great way to get some well-researched information in a funny way. You’ll never look at an or packet the same way again!
